Eliphas Levi’s writings were the source of a lot of the early Golden Dawn material and his attribution of the elemental beings to specific directions is likely to be the source for the attributions used by the Golden Dawn and tabulated above. In his most famous work Transcendental Magic, Levi explained:

“It must be borne in mind that the special kingdom of Gnomes is at the north, that of the Salamanders at the south, that of Sylphs at the east, and that of Undines at the west.”

Thus once again we have the same directional attributions to the same elements, only with the elemental beings associated with that element, rather than the archangels found in the later Golden Dawn material. It is clear that the Golden Dawn substituted the appropriate elemental archangel with the elemental being attributed here by Levi:

Direction Element Origin: Elemental Being

East Air Sylphs (beings of Air

South Fire Salamanders (beings of Fire)

West Water Undines (beings of Water)

North Earth Gnomes (beings of Earth)

Hello

My name is Sorita d'Este

and this is my website and blog!  Thanks for visiting - I hope you are finding what you are looking for!

Many years ago I dedicated myself to the pursuit of both esoteric knowledge, and an understanding of polytheism, the Gods and Nature.  I have been a full-time writer, author and publisher, specialising subjects linked to the occult, witchcraft, Paganism, mythology, ancient religions and magic - and all kinds of things in between since 2003.

I live on a hill in Glastonbury, overlooking the marshes of Somerset,  a place of myth and legend, and a crossroad for many different religions. Here I am frequently found digging and growing, serving my fluffy rescue cat and navigating the unknown with my teenage son.
